Melbourne and major regional cities
Taxi fares in metropolitan Melbourne and urban areas including Dandenong, Frankston, Ballarat, Bendigo and Geelong are regulated by the Government.
Find out about the fares that apply in your area on the Taxi Services Commission website
Country and regional Victoria
Taxis fares in country and regional areas of Victoria are no longer regulated by the Government but instead set by local taxi operators.
You can look up the fares for your local area on the Taxi Services Commission price notification system
We recommend you always keep a receipt for your taxi trip as it will help you if you need to follow up regarding lost property, offer a compliment or make a complaint.
If you have any suggestions, compliments or complaints contact the network with which you booked (shown on your receipt).
If you are unsure, contact the Taxi Services Commission.
Multiple hiring is when two or more hirers use the same taxi at the same time.
Because the hirers are giving up their exclusive use of the taxi-cab, the fare is discounted for each hirer. Regulation requires each hirer to agree to allow the driver to accept other hirings.
The hirer has the right to refuse to allow the driver to multiple hire if they would prefer not to share.
Multiple hirings must start at the same time and all hirers must be travelling to destinations in the same general direction.
The maximum fare that can be charged to each hirer is 75% of the standard authorised fare for the hirer's section of the journey.
- Reduced waiting times for customers in peak periods
- More efficient utilisation of available taxis
- Every hirer gets a discounted fare - the customer saves money
- The driver earns more for the trip
- For a cleaner, greener environment, share the kilometres
The Multi Purpose Taxi Program (MPTP) is a State Government-funded subsidy scheme managed by the TSC providing a 50 per cent subsidy on taxi fares (up to a maximum subsidy of $60 per trip) for cardholders.
The aim of the program is to improve the accessibility of transport services for Victorians with a severe and permanent disability which significantly restricts their mobility and prevents them from accessing public transport.
All enquiries regarding the MPTP Program should be directed to the Taxi Services Commission on 1800 638 802.
